The first Lenné wine using fruit sourced from the Case Vineyard, a small property located a few miles northeast of Lenne Estate, in the Chehalem Mountains AVA. The 2022s are the first Lenné vintage made by our new winemaker Jared Etzel, and this wine enjoyed 18 months aging in French oak. It is full-bodied with bold fruit flavors, and has beautiful balance and complexity for such a young wine,. As with all Lenné pinots, it will only improve with several years of cellar aging.
Vintage. The 2022 growing season was uniquely challenging. The Spring was cold and wet, and a freak storm dropped several inches of snow in late April. Those freezing temperatures killed off the new shoots coming just after bud break, and cloudy cool weather through May and June had the new growth well behind schedule. Thankfully., when the summer finally arrived it came with a vengeance, and we saw a record number of days above 90 degrees through August and September. October remained warm and dry, and the small fruitset finally ripened enough to harvest by mid-October, more than three weeks later than usual.
The resulting wines are complex and very reflective of their winemaker's technique. Many 2022 pinots that were barrel aged for less than a year taste very young, with decent flavors but a thin mouthfeel. The Lenné 2022s got 18 months in French oak, and that helped give them a much richer, bolder texture than most Willamette Valley pinots from the 2022 vintage.
