The Pommard clone is one of the oldest and most powerful pinot noir clones grown in the Willamette Valley. The 115 Dijon clone is known for it's fruit-forward, tropical, velvety profile, and it excels as a single clone or as a blending partner.
Our South Slope Select is a blence of the Pommard and 115 Dijon clones, melding the bold dark rich Pommard with the softer, more fruit-forward 115. One of Lenné's most popular wines, this blend is dark and bold, with notes of plum, Bing cherry, and cassis, along with a smooth, creamy texture and a lingering supple finish.
Though displaying the same silky texture, the South Slope Select is a denser version of Sad Jack, with more black fruit flavors. Like Sad Jack, it has plenty of complexity with savory and mineral-y notes adding to the chorus of fruity ones. It’s just a touch weightier and less explosive at this stage. It still conveys the “flavor without weight” character of great Pinot Noir. Hints of tar-like nuances and a subtle bitterness in the finish adds to its appeal.
95pts, Michael Apstein, Wine Review Online
The nose soars to new heights over time in the glass offering terrific aromas of black cherry, baking spices, vanilla and bramble. Very charming on entry with plenty of red and purple berry fruit to satisfy along with a gratifying spice accent. Admirable harmony makes for easy approachability now but this wine will age.
95pts, The Prince of Pinot.
The 2019 vintage was a damp year, with rain in July, August, and September. The cooler, cloudy weather meshed nicely with a medium to small fruit set and created wines with exceptional balance and depth, even in the first years in the bottle. While the 2019 vintage is very drinkable, we recommend 5+ years in the bottle to bring out the finest compexity and balance.
